Microsoft Operations Management Suite

Microsoft launched their exciting cloud-based monitoring and automation product – the Operations Management Suite (OMS) at Ignite last year. The Operations Management Suite extends the capabilities of Microsoft System Center and Azure to provide a complete management experience across any datacenter or cloud.

What can OMS do for the Enterprise?

OMS provides organisations with a broad range of Azure solutions to monitor and assess core cloud infrastructure services such as Azure Active Directory and O365.

What about datacenter and non-Microsoft solutions you ask?

Microsoft is aware that demand for cross-platform support is growing rapidly with Linux systems making up over 30% of all virtual appliances running in Azure. Microsoft listened and provide capabilities to monitor and assess both Windows and Linux systems whether in the cloud or datacenter. OMS and can also monitor your organization’s AWS resources and even technologies such as Docker containers.Microsoft OMS also provides automation capabilities to handle time-consuming and repetitive workflows and processes across Windows, Linux and System Center products in the cloud and datacenter using Azure Automation and PowerShell DSC.

Let’s take a look at some of the key solutions in the Operations Management Suite:

System Center Operations Manager Integration

Organisations with existing on-premises System Center Operations Manager infrastructure can increase their return on investment with OMS. Operations Manager management groups can be leveraged to securely send monitoring and alert data to your OMS workspace hosted in Azure where alert data from both datacentre and cloud can be viewed in a single pane of glass.
Combining these capabilities with powerful search and analysis tools available in the OMS portal provides superior operational insights to modern IT infrastructure. The OMS agent can also be used as a to monitor on-premises infrastructure without the requirement of existing Operation Manager infrastructure.

O365 Monitoring

The OMS O365 solution provides an overview of all ongoing user activities such as Sharepoint file download or access requests, Mailbox activity and AAD user and group changes.

Monitor user activities on your Office 365 accounts to analyse usage patterns as well as identify behavioural trends. You can extract specific usage scenarios, such as files that are shared outside your organization or the most popular SharePoint sites.
Monitor admin activities to track configuration changes or high privilege operations.
Detect and investigate unwanted user behaviour, which can be customized for your organizational needs.
Demonstrate audit and compliance. For example, you can monitor file access operations on confidential files, which can help you with the audit and compliance process.
Perform operational troubleshooting by using OMS Search on top of Office 365 activity data of your organization.

Log Analytics

The OMS agent can collect Windows Server event log data, IIS logs, security logs, performance metrics and more from both datacentre and cloud VMs hosted in Azure or AWS.
This provides organisations with near real-time operational insights into machine data with ready-made search intelligence and intuitive dashboards. Data can even be exported to tools such as Power BI to create custom dashboards and reports which can be published to your organisations SharePoint site.

Azure Automation

OMS includes licencing for Azure automation which leverages PowerShell as the platform for process automation and desired state configuration to assist with error-prone tasks which are performed either on-premises or in a cloud environment. Microsoft has made a huge investment in PowerShell, even providing support on Linux based systems!

Azure Automation can be leveraged to replace on-premises only solutions such as System Center Orchestrator. Microsoft has accommodated this transition to the modern automation solution with the ‘System Center Orchestrator Migration Toolkit’

Azure Automation also has many advantages over System Center Orchestrator:

  • Zero Infrastructure required: Azure Automation does not require deploying and maintaining additional infrastructure to automate workflows and processes
  • Superior RunBook creation tools
  • PowerShell DSC Support
  • Regular Release Updates: As a cloud service, new features and updates are regularly released
